How to play Ducklove

Ducklove has no score to chase and no levels to beat. You hatch a duck, look after it a little each day, and watch a pond fill up with your own flock. It is closer to keeping a pet than to a puzzle.

Choosing your first egg

A new game starts at the incubator, a tray of twelve eggs, no two the same. A marker goes round the tray. Press "Stop the tray" and the egg under the marker is yours. Size and shell colour are clues: a big white egg is Pekin-sized, a little cream one a call duck. The breed stays a surprise until it hatches.

The same twelve eggs are there if you close the game and return. Later, More then The incubator hatches another duck.

Fed, Watered and Loved

Three bars sit beside your duck's name. Green is Fed, blue is Watered, and pink is Loved. They run down slowly while she is awake, and she calls when one drops to a quarter.

  • Feed: tap the Feed button, then tap the water near her to scatter peas. Each feeding adds about a third to the Fed bar.
  • Water: one tap fills the Watered bar and gives everyone a fresh drink.
  • Pet: adds to the Loved bar. Her hearts show up to five.

On the first day, a coach makes one button glow at a time: Feed, then Water, then Pet. Tap her name at the top to open her card, which shows her breed, what she eats and likes, and what she is doing now.

Why nothing happens at night

The bars only run down while she is awake, between seven in the morning and nine at night by your clock. Overnight she sleeps and nothing drains, so the morning always begins with a duck to look after rather than a disaster. After days away, the game settles everything on your return and tells you what happened.

An empty bar is forgiven for eight awake hours. After that it counts as a mistake. A long absence adds at most one mistake per bar.

From duckling to adult

A duckling needs six feedings and 72 awake hours to become a fledgling. A fledgling needs 96 more awake hours and a Loved bar of at least sixty percent to become an adult, in her own breed's feathers. Two or more mistakes over her life leave the feathers plainer than they could have been.

Forage: thirty seconds of dabbling

Forage is the fast part. For thirty seconds, things surface and sink again. Tap the good ones before they go.

  • Duckweed is worth 1, snails and water beetles 2, minnows 3.
  • Bread costs 2 and a bottle cap costs 3. They look like food and are not.

Your round score never goes below zero. A score of 8 or more counts as one of the feedings a duckling needs, and the round also tops up Fed and Loved. At the end you get a verdict, from "Slim pickings" to "A feast", and one true duck fact. Your best round of the day goes on today's forage board.

Eggs, fathers and the journal

A grown hen who is well fed and happy lays an egg after 48 awake hours of being fed and loved. You can keep the egg for the breed journal, or incubate it to raise another duck. The shell colour always comes from the hen. If you have a grown drake of a kind that would pair with her, he may be the father, and the egg shows the chances of each possible chick. With no suitable drake, the chick hatches true to its mother.

The Breed journal lists breeds raised and still to find. A Muscovy crossed with another breed gives a sterile mule, and a wood duck only pairs with its own kind, as in real life.

Making the pond yours

From More you can build the pond with reeds, lily pads, rocks, a dock, a duck house, a log, a dish and a nest, switch the scenery between a garden pond, a lake, a stream and a deck,. "Add your own duck" turns a photo into a duck of your own, up to six, with a name, a temperament and a voice. The photo is shrunk and stays on your device.

Reminders are off until you turn them on: at most two a day, never at night.

Ducklove questions answered

What happens if I forget a day?

Nothing drains overnight, and an empty bar gets eight awake hours of grace. After that you get a mistake, which can mean plainer feathers.

Why did my duckling not grow up?

Check the card's "next" line. A duckling needs six feedings as well as time, and a fledgling needs the Loved bar at sixty percent.

Is there a streak or a leaderboard?

There is no streak. The only board is the daily forage board.

Can I name my duck?

Yes, up to sixteen letters, and you can rename her from her card.
