What a Holidays card looks like

Four choices, one answer. The first words of the questions break down as follows: 8 start with “Which”, 2 start with “What”, 1 start with “Before”. Each answer is followed by a fact of up to 20 words. In 9 cases the answer is just one word.

A source article stands behind each one; nothing goes in unchecked.

Holidays samples and their answers

Here are two questions from the Holidays bank, taken from the older end of the branch and clear of the daily ten for the weeks around the day this page was built.

Question: Which Halloween candy started life in the 1880s under the name "Chicken Feed"?

Answer: Candy corn. A candy maker named George Renninger came up with it, and the recipe has barely moved since.

The wrong choices on the card were Candy canes, Jelly beans, and Tootsie Rolls.

Checked against Candy corn (Wikipedia).

Question: Before pumpkins, what did people in Ireland hollow out to make Halloween lanterns?

Answer: Turnips. They carved grotesque faces into them to frighten whoever was out on Halloween night.

The wrong choices on the card were Potatoes, Cabbages, and Carrots.

Checked against Jack-o'-lantern (Wikipedia).
